JOHN BLACKMAN and PAUL DUBOW were both members of the Judicial Council committee which spent three years developing the new rules for court connected mediations in California. These rules will apply to all state court connected mediations. Their unique experience should provide substantial guidance to those mediators who are or intend to be on the roster of state court mediation panels.

John is a civil trial attorney with Farbstein & Blackman in San Mateo, who acts frequently as a mediator, arbitrator, neutral evaluator, and private judge pro tem. He has written extensively on the subject of alternate dispute resolution and its relation to the practice of law, especially dealing with issues of attorney ethics and malpractice. He has chaired the San Mateo County Bar Association’s ADR Section since 1992, and is one of the founding members of the San Mateo County Multi-Option ADR Project.

Paul is the immediate past president of the Mediation Society. He was the director of litigation at Dean Witter Reynolds from 1970 to 1996 and currently is an arbitrator and mediator in Danville, specializing in securities, employment, and commercial litigation matters. Paul is a member of the State Bar Committee on Alternate Dispute Resolution as well as the Judicial Council Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee, where he has been assigned to the ADR Subcommittee. He is also vice chair of the Arbitration Committee of the Dispute Resolution Section of the ABA and is former co-chair of the ADR Committee of the Litigation Section of the ABA.
