Description:
The final dinner of the year and Annual Membership Meeting is September 18th. Grande Lum, former Director of the Dispute Resolution Center at Hastings and current Director, by President appointment, of the Director of the US Department of Justice, Community Relations Service, will be the featured speaker to tell us about this very vital agency created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 under President Johnson to help resolve racially-tinged community disputes.n
Grande Lum is a former San Francisco
mediator and director of the Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution
at the Hastings College of Law. He received his BA from Berkeley and his JD
from Harvard. By appointment of President Obama, he now serves as Director of the Community Relations Service (CRS). The Conciliation Specialists of CRS address community conflict and the prevention of hate crimes that involve race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion and disability. Like mediators, their work remains
unpublicized and confidential. Yet for 50 years, CRS has quietly addressed some of our Country’s most strident conflict involving allegations of
racial discrimination and hate crimes.n
